What are treatment options for periodontitis?
Periodontitis can be a devastating and painful problem for our Shorewood, Joliet and Plainfield dental patients. Dr. Kurt Faber and Dr. Jonathan Faber can provide patients with information regarding periodontal prevention as well as treatment options for those already suffering from periodontitis.
There are many options for treatment of periodontitis, including:
- Scaling and root planning
For Shorewood, Joliet and Plainfield patients that are not yet ready for a surgical option, scaling and root planning is a great option. This nonsurgical procedure scrapes away plaque and tartar providing a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth.
- Flap surgery/pocket reduction surgery
During this procedure, the gums are lifted back so that the tartar can be removed. Depending on the severity of the case, some irregular surfaces of the damaged bone are smoothed to eliminate the areas where bacteria can go. With this surgery, the size of the space between the gums and teeth is greatly reduced so there are less areas where bacteria can grow.
- Bone grafts
For Shorewood, Joliet and Plainfield patients that already have bone destroyed from periodontitis, this is an excellent surgical option. Bone graft surgery involves using fragments of your own bone or synthetic bone to replace bones destroyed from gum disease. This restores the stability to your teeth by creating a platform for the regrowth of bone. There are also more advances in technology termed tissue engineering in which your own body regenerates bones and tissue at an accelerated rate.
- Soft tissue grafts
This procedure strengthens thin gums or fills in the places where the gums have withdrawn. Grafted tissue, which is most often taken from the roof of the mouth, is used to add tissue to the affected area.
- Guided tissue regeneration
For Shorewood, Joliet and Plainfield patients with periodontitis where the bone supporting the teeth has been destroyed, guided tissue regeneration stimulates bone and gum tissue growth. Dr. Kurt Faber and Dr. Jonathan Faber will perform this in conjunction with flap surgery, a small piece of mesh-like fabric is inserted between the bone and gum tissue to keep the gum tissue from growing into the area where the bone should be. This allows for stronger regrowth of teeth.
- Bone surgery
For Shorewood, Joliet and Plainfield patients with moderate to advanced bone loss, bone surgery is an excellent option. Subsequent to flap surgery, the bone around the tooth is reshaped to decrease the dips and craters making it harder for bacteria to grow.
